The Salang Tendrel for the construction of Forensic Laboratory

The Salang Tendrel for the construction of Forensic Laboratory was held today at Serbithang, Thimphu. The laboratory will be constructed at the cost of Nu. 24.2 Million funded by Austrian Development Cooperation(ADC). The ground breaking ceremony was attended by the officials of Royal Government of Bhutan and the donor agency.

As of now, only basic lab equipments are available for preliminary processing of DNA evidence. After processing, the samples are being sent to ex-country. However, these services have proven to be very erratic and time consuming. In some cases, the analytical results are delayed for over a year. There is also the issue of the validity of the ex-country reports considering the problems of traceability and the chain of custody of evidence.

Therefore, with the vision of Royal Bhutan Police “To make Bhutan a safe place to live and work”, the construction of forensic laboratory is expected to provide fair and evidence based justice services.
